While you may not think to travel to the great state of O-H-I-O, I am from there and proudly call myself a Buckeye. I grew up in a small suburb, and drove back in forth to my first dance job in the city of Dayton. We would take long rides with my dad past Wright Patterson Air Force Base; we loved looking at the planes. I also will never forget the never ending stretches of crops.
As it is the month of Christmas, and the holidays tend to overwhelm me with memories of my original home, we’re going to explore some of my very favorite places.
Open since 1869, Young’s Dairy is where it’s at for lighthearted family fun and absolutely scrumptious ice cream. It is a summer favorite of our family’s, and we especially love a good visit with the dairy cows and acrobatic goats!
The Shadowbox Cabaret
One of my favorite live theater experiences is at The Shadow Box Cabaret. It is actually the site of one of my husband and I’s first dates- over 14 years ago, and they are a business that is still going strong. Their original shows are a hoot, and the live music features incredible musicians and vocalists. If you get the chance whilst in Columbus, put Shadow Box on your list!
Slate Run Historical Farm
If you have kids, then a drive to the Slate Run Living Historical Farm should be on your list if you are in the Columbus area. Get ready to go back in time learning the ways of early farm life, and make room for extra horse pats and sheep snuggles.
Hocking Hills State Park
Need some great hiking? How about a cute cabin rental for the weekend? Hocking Hills State Park is a wonderful find, with a nice campground and some sweet family cabins.
Easton Towne Center
I know, I know, a mall?! But Easton Towne Center is a whole day-date of fun. Yes, there’s plenty of shopping to do, but I also love the huge movie theater and array of delicious bars and restaurants. Find Celebrate Local, a shop that features all local vendors and artisans from Ohio.
Columbus Zoo (especially the Festival of Lights at Christmastime):
The Wild Lights of Columbus Zoo are one of the most fabulous journeys to make during the holiday season. Any other time of year it’s a pretty nice zoo with aquarium also.
Bonus Points! Read below:
- Want the best crème filled donut of your LIFE?! Go to Schuler’s Bakery in Springfield, Ohio.
- My heart still flies with The Muse Machine, a program that brought visiting artists to my schools from elementary on up. They also put on fantastic yearly productions featuring local area kids. It is a program that gives so much to the arts program in the Dayton and surrounding areas.
Ohio is a magical place if you get to visit someday! Yes, I completely skipped over the awesome offerings of Cincinnati and also Cleveland (we could do a whole post just on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) but I’ve given you the highlights of my time growing up Ohioian. There’s so much more to the “Heart of it All” than meets the eye.
